DIY Rose for Fall Decorating on a Budget

September 19, 2017

Normally, we post about nutrition, health, and recipes, but I just couldn’t resist posting about my newest project – DIY Rose fall decorations.  I got inspired by some really fun Pinterest ideas like this one from PopSugar on spray painting items with metallic spray paint. As the weather turns just a bit cooler, I still want some of that trendy and sophisticated Rose gold around my house.  I mean, how can you not love the look of this metallic but feminine color?

This project started with finding some basic items that had a great look and shape, even if the colors weren’t quite right.  I found some really cool wooden pears at the Goodwill store that just needed a cool coat of paint and lots of plastic pumpkins that served as a perfect base for painting.  Plus, we got the kids involved and took a fun nature hike up in Tahoe to search for pinecones, tree branches and other wood pieces with character.  The kids loved searching for shapes and the family time and memories together in that beautiful forest are priceless.  The rest of the supplies came from Amazon, Hobby Lobby and Michaels, all my favorite places for great decor inspiration!

I had originally thought that I would primarily use spray paint to get this project done, but ultimately I found that using a brush and acrylic metallic paints were significantly less messy and more conducive to the intricacy of the items I was working with.  Added bonus, the kids could definitely be a part of the painting project because they could use the brushes and paint as they wanted without me worrying about the sprays.  Here are some fun pictures of the objects as we worked on them.

THE TOOLS

  • A handful of mixed size brushes
  • Sandpaper
  • 4-5 colors acrylic paints
  • 1 roll blue painters tape to create straight edges where you want them
  • A large container for water to rinse your brushes
  • Plenty of paper towels
  • A clean space covered in a drop cloth (I save the random plastic table cloths from my kids’ birthday parties and use them as drop cloths)

HOW TO

  • For your thrift store objects, thoroughly clean the object as appropriate for the material.  e.g.  if you are painting a metal object, use rubbing alcohol and clean the entire surface with a  cotton pad.  For a piece of wood, use a lightly wet paper towel and rub clean, dry completely and sand the entire object
  • Paint your objects with a brush, coating the entire surface.  For some paint brands, you may need 2-3 coats per object.
  • It may take up to 3 days for the object to fully dry.
  • Decorate and enjoy your work!
